I took my vehicle to caliber to get scratches off the side that were the full length of the vehicle from front quarter panel to rear quarter panel. The estimator came out and put her hands on the scratches to feel how deep the scratches were. Then she determined that before she would prepare an estimate for repainting, she would get their detailer to see if he could buff out the scratches.
