I recently had a right hip replacement using the Star approach. I highly recommend this approach and Dr. Nickels. 6 months prior to this I had my left hip done at Mayo using the anterior approach and it was absolutely horrible. The pain was horrendous and caused a lot of nerve issues. I have still not completely recovered from that 6 months later. He performed my right knee replacement about 4.5 months ago. The procedure went well. I had very good follow up care from Dr. Nickel and his staff, including nurses, PAs, and physical therapists. He was very thorough at my post-op appointment, and I did not feel rushed. I am scheduled with him for my left knee replacement in June and feel comfortable and optimistic that it will also go well.
I had a total hip replacement done by Dr. Nickel in January of 2026. I had done PT and injections without much relief and as someone that likes to be very active, my quality of life was significantly effected. When I had intiially learned this was the best course of action, I was apprehensive and had a lot of questions and concerns, especially being 38 years old. Dr Nickel has done both a knee and hip replacement for me. Both were excellent. Dr Nickel was excellent! He was very thorough, explained cause and options. I was prepared for surgery and recovery. Surgery and recovery could not have gone better. I was back on my bike on the road at day 15 after hip replacement. Highly recommend!
Just received a new knee with Dr. Brian Nickel. After he replaced my hip there was no doubt in my mind that he would be the one for the knee. If you are contemplating orthopedic surgery, look no further than. He is truly the best! Wonderful person first of all, great bed side manner & really truly cares about his patients.
