It goes all the way back! The nice dentist with the Mustang a year older than my filling, wanted to retrieve something from my gaping tooth so he could see how deep the cavity was. My reply was that it goes all the way. I did eventually give him access and the cavity as I imagined went all the way. The cool part is that he was kind and patient and didn't call for someone to 5150 my crazy phobic self. I have to go back for repair and I'm hoping he is anchored well when he takes his tools into the abyss.
