Not great, not terrible either, but bad customer service – I have ordered takeout from Black Pearl a few times. The food is decent, but there is better Chinese food elsewhere. I liked the wontons in peanut sauce. I have never had a very good experience with the customer service at this restaurant. Once I ordered $90 worth of food for a group dinner and when I went to pick up the food I asked if they had chili sauce. The bus boy went to get me the chili sauce which came in those tiny tiny plastic containers. He was about to g... read more
Typical and not impressive – After reading some reviews of Black Pearl, I decided to try it once. I was not impressed at all. It tasted like almost any other Chinese place. The hot and sour soup was good, but I think you have to find a REALLY bad place to find bad soup. The beef dish that I got was definitely not worth the money. I decided to give it a second chance later and tried the homemade noodles. Better, but they seemed a little bland to me (though the blandness allowed you to fully taste the noodles, which are good).... read more
Certain things are good, other things suck – I think the title says it all. The homemade chow mein noodles are delicious, as are the potstickers. Both are totally worth going back for. However, their chicken dishes definitely leave something to be desired - the sauces are thin and just plain don't taste good.
very disappointing – I've tried delivery and take-out, totalling 2 experiences with this restaurant. Both times, the fried rice was scorched. The pork wontons in the wonton soup were mushy and pretty nasty. The walnut prawns for almost $12 were 10 in number, with a pile of walnuts and half an orange on the side, with about a teaspoon of sauce. Try Asian Place on 160th for this dish: around 20 pcs. displayed beautifully on a bed of broccoli and crispy rice noodles. Black Pearl's homemade noodles are good, as is the Lover's Eg... read more
An average place – My wife & I ate there Saturday night, July 31, 2004. This is not typical of most places I've been. We had 10 Ingredient Chow Mein & Mu Shu Pork. We usually order more exotic stuff than that but we just wanted a simple meal. We need to try other menu items before we make a final decision. I didn't care for the potstickers No atmosphere and average service. For what we had, I don't have any problem with that.
Good Food; Bad Value – I live four blocks away from Black Pearl so for better or worse I'm very familiar with the restaurant. The food is good. The style of cooking is homestyle; the type of place you could take your elderly aunt to. That said, the restaurant is VERY inconsistant in portions and value. I've had to send back $7.95 dishes of things like yu shiang pork and sesame beef because the portion was so small that it could have been dished out with an ice cream scoop. This isn't much of a problem when dining at the rest... read more
Have it delivered – I don't particularly care for eating in the restaurant, not much ambience, but the food is heavenly so I get home delivery as often as the budget allows. The delivery service is extremely efficient, they ALWAYS get there quicker than I expect, the drivers are polite and the food is always hot and fresh.
not your typical chinese joint – what makes black pearl special is the lack of grease and sodium that is so common to 'chinese' restaurants. the flavors are more subtle and delicate and everything tastes very fresh. they also have a large variety of vegetarian dishes. one negative - the service is hit or miss. although food is always served promptly, water glasses are not always refilled and it usually takes awhile to see the check.
yum. – Excellent food & fast service. Favorites are green onion pancake, hot & sour soup, green beans with almonds, spinach & mushroom potstickers and their homemade noodles.
Black Pearl has a 3.5 star rating with 30 reviews.
