About this business

We opened our doors in the heart of the bustling Mission District of SF in 2005. Unlike many Chinese restaurants here in the states, the chefs at Big Lantern are here to accommodate the needs of its patrons & thus offer many combination plates not found anywhere else. We are also proud to offer delicious Cantonese Dim Sum every day. Our philosophy is to have people come eat and enjoy the happiness & holiday feel that is Big lantern.

Help this great restaurant survive! – I myself am a Mission local and I used to go to the restaurant in this location that served really bad Chinese food. For a few months it closed up and re-invented itself, now it's amazing! Great food, excellent service(for a Chinese restaurant!), and even a clean bathroom! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. And to qualify my judgement of Chinese food - I lived in Asia for over ten years and this is definitely good quality in my book. I hear wind that the chef came from... read more

GREAT dim sum – I've eaten at Big Lantern several times, and ordered for delivery once. Their dim sum is really great, and it's so nice to not have to head to the avenues/Geary or Chinatown for decent dim sum. The selection is really good too--pork buns three ways--steamed, baked and pan fried. I've tried em all. They also do really good faux meat dishes--I HIGHLY recommend the General's (faux) Chicken. It is to di3 for--my meat eating husband even loves it. Other highlights are their chow fun and fried rice dishes. Best I'v... read more

A screened-in porch and a few sidewalk tables provide additional seating for neighborhood locals and small groups. Accessible Chinese standards prove consistent but make for few surprises. Dim sum standouts include a tasty tunip cake and sweet and savory baked barbecue pork bun. The menu is stocked with plenty of the usual suspects--including... read more

Finally! Great Chinese in Mission, Not Greasy – I've tried a few Chinese joints here in the Mission but nothing has really made me want to come back for me. Big Lantern has changed this. I got takeout, tried the Mongolian Beef and the pork potstickers. The food was not heavy or greasy, and the beef was well spiced but not overboard. The menu is not extensive, but this is a good thing: perhaps instead of serving the same chicken dish with difference sauces they can really focus on fewer things and doing them better. I am very... read more
