i know children whose negative impact from this program -- who will shoo away anything that gives them five more minutes of work to do or anyone's individual situation to thin about -- has been as damaging as the life experiences that encouraged their loved ones to get a mentor. i would NEVER suggest Big Brothers Big Sisters to ANYONE who cares about a child -- they will become attached to a mentor and then NEVER BE ALLOWED TO SEE THEM AGAIN IN A SINGLE PHONE CALL. i would NEVER volunteer for an organization like this, and a... read more

I have tried to get my son a big brother since he was 7. now 14. they had a school program in 5th grade, (now, failed 7th and repeating) ran for the year and was cancelled. The brother said he would continue with my son and program denied the request. Just another positive male role model ripped from him. Nothing since at all. no follow ups. now my son is an angry teen, suicidal idealization and at serious risk. How frustrating it is that no one seems to care.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has had a profound impact on me. I was a Little Sister growing up in Philadelphia, and my Big was wonderful. She was there to listen when no one else did, and just being with her gave me perspective I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I've been involved with this amazing organization for several years, and as a Big Sister now, I want to give that to my Little. I have been a Big Sister for over 5 years with the same little. BBBS always helps us out with activities and ideas of what to do. Great program to voulanteer with and get involved in.

As a 35 year Big Brother Alumni I consider the Big Brother Big Sister organization to be a wonderful addition to a child's development..To have adult mentors in a child's life can work wonders...but...all matches and potential matches must be handled with the most careful consideration to ALL parties involved...the child..the parent..the BigBrother/Sister.
