A fun experience Culinary students at the Art Institute in Chicago cook and serve a well planned and delicious meal. We ordered the three course meal, and it was definitely the right decision! At times the service was awkward but they were learning. The food was amazing! you do have to call the restaurant to make a reservation and see when/if they are open. It's a school so they aren't always there. It was really neat to watch the students cooking and learning through the windows into the kitchens.

An Intermittent Hidden Gem on North Wabash We stumbled on the Backstage Bistro while walking from our hotel (Silversmith, very very good) to the Architectural River Tour (excellent). The Bistro is the restaurant of the International Culinary School at the Illinois Institute of Art. We were there for the last dinner served for that term. (By the way, the restaurant is not open all the time, only while school is on.) So call at 312 777-7800. Attention: No alcohol is served or permitted (you can't bring in a bottle.) The meal, (we got the 3 course meal for $22, the full price, although I think that they are on Groupon) was one of the best we had in Chicago, and many restaurants elsewhere (New York, Ottawa, Montreal). The service was 'hesitant' meaning a bit uncertain, as the waiters were still relatively new. The food was great, tasting as good as the accompanying photos look. The staff were friendly and attentive. That term they were doing a theme of Middle Eastern food. We strongly recommend this. This was a great find for a restaurant in Chicago.
