Last minute visit . Wanted some good Italian food and it certainly was good food. Wait staff was attentive and efficient. Sat at the chefs bar and it's obvious that they have good cooks and people who care about their craft. So why 4stars? I felt it was a little too pretentious for my tastes. The wine menu speaks no English. The wine steward went on for I shit you not 15 minutes on bs wine lingo. Even the bathroom with it's quaint tippy cup soap is going just a tad over the top. This is the one restaurant in the stratosphere that I simply just don't 'get.' I have dined here twice. The family style is great if everyone has the same tastes...and budget. The food is high quality but the portions are VERY small and cost a fortune. I went out with friends, blew $100 and ended up driving directly to a burger joint after - just to get full. This is great for those wanting to sick it to their expense account but I shouldn't need dinner after blowing $100 on 'dinner.'
I have waited s long time to go to Ava Genes...and it did not disappoint. From the Negroni cocktail to the halibut..e .it was perfecto. Our service was excellent. We will be back for the grappa and dessert. Thank you for such a wonderful easter meal.

Unbelievably the best food!! Take time to sit at the counter. The staff are art in motion. Every detail of every plate fantastic. Fresh ingredients and delightful unique plates. This is a must if visiting PDX. We love ❤️ to eat our way around your city and after three days this is top in our list!!
