AMALI - GREAT FOOD - GREAT ATMOSPHERE! – Read many interesting write-ups on this place in recent months so wife and i decided to investigate. I must say the place is incredibly beautiful and a bit intimidating at first but the staff made us feel relaxed and comfortable. The crab appetizer was very good and my sliced steak over marinaded red peppers and greens was superb. The service is good though a little laid-back. The wine list is pretty extensive but our waiter led us to a bottle of Borolo that we enjoyed so much, we sli... read more

Downhill Slide – We went to Amalia when it first opened and had a wonderful meal, and looked forward to our second visit last night. What a disappointment! The staff seemed like they were comatose it took forever for everything, getting the menu, getting the wine, getting our order taken, and getting our food. Not only were they slow, they weren't particularly friendly about it. The food lacked the vibrance that it had on our first visit, the whole place just seemed tired (not to mention empty). Very sad for such a new estab... read more

Disappointing – My wife and I went here on the strength of good reviews and were disappointed. It's very stylish, but the music is loud and obnoxious and the staff are not very competent. Our appetizer arrived beore our bread or wine. Then the entrees came out before we were even half way through the appetizer - they took them away and kept them warm, and needless to say the result was not very good. The calamari was tasty, but small portioned. The sea bass was oleaginous and swamped in a pungent sauce that hid the fish flav... read more

Excellent food and service – We ate at Amalia on 7/1707 at 530pm just prior to a show. The resturant is in an excellent location near several theaters. The atmosphere was romantic with a candle on the table. The music was not blaring but had a nice techno beat. The food was excellent. The swordfish was some of the best I have ever had. It was very tender as they have some type of procedure that makes it softer than it normally is. My wife's porkchop was also outstanding. The service was efficient and attentive as they knew w... read more

So pretty you can't stay mad... – So I went here for my 29th birthday and found the decor to be looovely, the food yummmmy, and wait staff... not so much! First we watied eons for our sommalier, then we waited eons for our bottles of wine - so long that we asked our waitress WHERE the wine was... then we got the wine set on the table, but the sommalier was MIA and we couldn't open the bottles with our hands so we waited again. In fairness, after speaking with the GM, we were offered a free bottle of bubbly - and the food IS ... read more

Hip space in Midtown – What a great discovery! I made reservations here for a friend's baby shower. They gave us a nice table with a few extra seats for the presents. While I would not say it is a great spot for kids, we had 3 two-year-olds with us, and the hostesses and staff were very accomodating. You must try the eggplant and goat cheese lasagna for appetizer and the warm caramel center chocolate tart!!!

MY FAVORITE NEW SPOT IN MIDTOWN! – I recently had the pleasure to dine at Amalia and what a memorable evening it was. Upon my entrance, my senses were greeted by the intensity of wonderful aromas and breathtaking design elements. I was surprised to find the restaurant filled to capacity early on a Thursday evening. Everyone from the host who greeted me to bartender who mixed my first cocktail set the tone for a special evening. I had the Shrimp Fideau (spelling?) which was an amazing paella-style dish wth toasted pasta, clam... read more

Sometimes a restaurant is just a restaurant--and sometimes it's a surreally decorated modern Meditereanean spot in midtown. – In Short Amalia is named for Sigmund Freud's mother, and one can imagine her son would have a field day analyzing the competing textures and patterns flowing through the two-story space. Glass-ensconsed beams, baroque paintings hung on the ceiling, and peacock-adorned wallpaper summon a dreamlike state, as do the menu's modern twists on Mediterranean fare: hamachi crudo, chorizo-stuffed chicken with p... read more
