Dr Athar was my father's oncologist. After being diagnosed w/cancer a 2nd time, Athar only recommended chemo (and lots of it). He refused to approve or refer my father for proton therapy (radiation). We had to get approval from another doctor. After he completed the proton therapy, Athar refused to conduct any scans or procedures to see if the treatments worked-just recommended more chemo. My father didn't go back for over 2 years. When he did, after a PET scan, Athar told my dad he had 2 months to live and recommended hospi... read more
I have nothing but praise for him. I have learned so much more about my breast cancer than from my previous Dr. Dr Athar takes the time to explain everything well going over previous tests results that had not been explained by my previous Dr. He seems to genuinely care about his patients. His nurse has also been great about calling me back the few times I have called. I get a call back the same day.
It's a shame that Dr. Athar has received less that 5 star reviews based on the office staff and their responses to request. I am also Dr. Athar's patient and can easily give a 5 star review. He is a kind, knowledgeable physician who enters the room with a sense of calm in an area that is often anxiety provoking. He shows a personal interest in his patients that is sincere and caring. I am happy to be under his care.
His nurse took days to respond to my urgent call. She was rude, seemed to be doubting my symptoms. I ended up back in the hospital. Went once, never going back.
My mom was super ill after her chemo. When we asked to see Athar we were told he was gone for 3 weeks to go see basketball games. They kept pumping her with chemo to the point where she couldn't eat or stand. We ended up taking her elsewhere and was told she never needed chemo and had way to much in her system, but by then it was too late. He ultimately killed my mom and was vert disrespectful. I would not encourage anyone to go to this physician.
I had been assigned to Dr Athar because he was new & Tx Onc trying to fill his schedule. My first chemo infusion, I had a terrible reaction - could not breathe. I called to talk to Dr Athar next morning (Tues)- i was told he would call me back. He never did. Wed I called & asked for an appt, my breathing was no better. I finally got an appt on Fr. He says "its just a reaction to the chemo"! ??? Fortunately I had made an spot w/UTSW for Mon, who sent me imm to pulmonary. I left Athar!!!
