The weekend calls for an escape to the beach, and while the weather might be cooling, the coast still has a whole lot of fun to offer. In Yachats, Ore., a foggy stroll along the shore is best paired with a bowl of New England–style clam chowder from Luna Sea Fish House, filled to the brim with seafood caught from owner Robert Anthony’s boat. Contributing Editor Katie Henry is just back from Bass Lake, Calif., which is nestled in the granite slopes of the southern Sierra Nevada. While the lake is a destination on its own, the close proximity to Yosemite National Park makes it popular in the summer. “We spent alternating days exploring Yosemite and relaxing by the lake. The contrast of hiking in the spectacular valley and then lounging on the beach was perfect. "On our first morning in Yosemite, we hiked the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls. It gets pretty crowded as th... read more
Of the 450 covered bridges that once traversed the rushing rivers and trickling creeks of Oregon, only about 50 remain. McKee Bridge, perched 45 feet above Applegate River, is the highest of the historic spans. AAA Member Sue Newman (IG: @NewmanImages), who took the photo, calls this spot a half hour southwest of Medford one of her favorite places to catch fall color. "There are maples right around it and other deciduous trees that turn golden," says her husband and photography partner Jay Newman. "Plus, it's got great after... read more
