best jazz, worst venue – yoshi's is the bay area jazz monopolist, and the rude staff knows it. yoshi's gets the best acts, but offer the worst experience. preferential treatment is offered if you eat their over-priced, second rate japanese food. drink service is slow and awkward, serving to people crowded in uncomfortable seats, awkwardly arranged. i have witnessed more than one drink go into someone's lap. unlikeley more than a couple will sit together unless very early, which means waiting outside. don't confuse the music ... read more
swank-o-rama – Swank place to hear jazz. Sophisticated crowd, a-m-a-z-i-n-g sushi and good wine list. A nice evening for grown-ups.
Like Defrosted Sushi? – I have been to Yoshi's for dinner 3 times and after last night (second BAD experience), I will never go again. We were celebrating my mother's birthday and every plate that was brought out was not only untasty, it was unattractive. The salad was limp, soggy, and tasteless. Smokin' jazz – Great acoustics and view of the performers, as well as a decent a la carte sushi menu and beers on tap. It's more enjoyable if you go with a group or if you don't mind sitting next to strangers. Great date spot!
Excellent Music – I caught Oakland jazz scene legend Pharoah Sanders there one night, and I have to say it was captivating. The acoustics were crisp and the space very comfortable. Once you buy your ticket, they give you reserved sign to place on the seat of your choice. My party of three scored a very comfortable booth with optimal views of the stage.
