horrible service for average sushi – Okay, I used to be a BIG fan of Yama, but something been happening with the place this past year or so. I agree with the other poster that said that we should removed outdated reviews 'cause Yama is definitely not the way it was. Yes, the sushi is a big chunk of fish, but you are paying for it, they just don't cut it up in little pieces like the other sushi restaurants. But you are still paying for it. And the fish is just not as fresh or buttery or whatever as it used to me. I feel like ... read more
Worst Sushi place in the entire World Universe – they deserve 5 starts for attitude but 0 for food quality and service My friend ordered Yuni, it was fresh at all. so we decided to return it and they everything went downhill. Stay away from this place. Not worth a penny. No one smiles in that place, they presented the bill even before we even looked @ deserts... like you get the message They should be evicted from NY. YAMA you are the WORST!
"the best sushi in manhattan" oh so true! – I was walking up Irving Place one day, and I heard some guy say to his friend "that place over there is the best sushi in Manhattan". I had never been there, my Uncle is a Sushi Guru. So I mentioned it to him, and he agreed- that it was the best Sushi in Manhattan. He picked me up this past Thursday to take me out to his house in the Hamptons. He said he wanted to make one little detour. We stopped at Yama, he has some amazing connections. There was an hour wait, and we were seated... read more
You Would Not Want to go to Yama if You Have any Taste for Quality Sushi – I went to Yama last evening, and I was surprised at how awful it's become. I had last been to Yama about 6 years ago. This time, as back then, there was a line to get in - I would have thought that this was a sign of quality. Well, after waiting the half hour to get in (no big deal) and sitting in a dull interior room that had little decor (still no big deal because you come for the sushi) - we were served extremely sub-par food. The only "positive" a... read more
One of the best sushi joints in NYC!!! – I have tried all sorts of sushi places in NYC (yo, choshi, bond, east, samba, hiro, butai, ginger, mizu and the like) and nobody comes close to Yama's fresh sushi and decent prices. The sushi pieces are of bigger than average portions and they just melt in your mouth! You have got to try the Shiro Maguro and Hamachi! YUMMY!!! I've tried so many other places and feel like they all come from the same crappy fish distributor. But Yama has by far some of the freshest fish!!! Don't come he... read more
Very good sushi – I went to Yama last week, on a wednesday evening, and the place was not packed at all. I was seated immediately and the service was very attentive. The food was delicious. I tried the fried baby octopus appetizer, really good and several of the special rolls, which were all excellent. I would definetely go back to Yama.
good sushi joint – i like this place, always consistent, serve large pieces, and large rolls, prices are decent also, not much of an atmosphere, u can show up in a tshirt and wont feel out of place. its a small undergorund restaurant that always has a wait, so be prepared to wait for a half hour if u go during normal dinner hours.
Where fresh sushi meets poor execution – Those who flock to this restaurant will invariably find fresh fish beckoning to them to take a seat and dine on the mammoth-sized portions of sushi. To some, the size of the fish is offensive as it is not properly sized to convention. To others, they come for exactly that reason. But unfortunately, there's a problem. On 3 separate dining occassions, as we would reach for them, the rolls, as if on cue, would unfurl themselves so that one would have to pick at it. Your pleasant dining e... read more
Horrible Service and Boring/Dull Atmosphere – The sushi was good, but the customer service and atmosphere were horrible. Went with two other people. One person does not eat raw fish so she ordered the crunchy "shrimp roll." When she received her sushi it was a tuna roll with a piece of shrimp sashimi on top. She explained to the waitress that it was not explained to her and how should she know that it had raw tuna inside of it. The waitress refused to exchange the roll for one that she would eat. The waitress actually laughe... read more
