Did you know that you can lose huge chunks of your hay due to poor feeding habits? For example, feeding your cattle from a hay rack or hay ring will help minimize how much hay gets trampled or soiled, and is especially effective if you feed more than one day’s of hay at a time.

Good sanitation isn’t just for our homes; it’s also important to have for your cattle. You should frequently get rid of old manure and bedding, as wells as disinfect any area where cattle have been sick. It’s especially important to keep where they feed clean.

Did you know that hay can vary tremendously in terms of nutritional content? While meadow hay is naturally higher in protein than seed hay, the primary determinants of nutritional quality include the time of year it is harvested and the weather conditions in which it was grown.

In case you were not aware – an ear of corn has 600 kernels (give or take) and there is one strand of “silk” for each kernel. The silk thread is the key component in pollination.

Remember, taking care of structural problems when they first appear saves the cost of expensive repairs down the line. By keeping a few fencing materials and equipment handy while you are out in your truck, you can fix damage as soon as you spot it.

Even if you do not use drugs or antibiotics in your operation to meet guidelines and regulations for the production of organic meat and milk, do not overlook vaccinations. This is one of the most effective ways to protect your herds and still stay within certification requirements.

BCS, or body condition scoring, is an approved and accurate measure for determining the general health of beef cattle. Scores ascend from 1 to 9 (one indicates skeletal; nine is obese), with 4 - 6 being the optimal range for production and health.
