A fixed island kitchen is so… inflexible. What to do? Please consider an island that moves: substantial enough to anchor the kitchen space, yet capable of doing bar, or buffet service anywhere in the house, so long as it’s main floor. Oh, let’s also make it from locally harvested city trees. Enter, “Wood from the Hood,” Kelley Hermes, shepherdess. She took our fuzzy notions, from ‘blue sky’ to tactile, functional reality: organic, of our natural surroundings. With Kelley we talked, sketched, iterated, refined, and ultimat... read more
We could not be more pleased with our experience with Wood from the Hood. We had a dining room table made from two walnut trees on our yard. We designed the table with assistance from Kelly Hermes. During the nearly two year process Kelly kept us informed every step of the way from the drying of the would to the construction of the table. The craftsmanship was first rate and would highly recommend Wood from the Hood.
Great place to pick up locally sourced wood at good prices! Good selection of species (especially ash, oak) and thicknesses. In particular, roasted ash is worth checking out. Beautiful with just an oil finish. (legs in pics are ash, lower stretchers are roasted ash) Staff is friendly and helpful.
This place is not only doing great things for the community it carries some amazing slabs of tree species. I went out on a limb and started a black walnut epoxy tabletop project. Using two slabs I purchased from them and MAS Epoxy I went on a journey to make it happen! They were not only knowledgeable but helpful on any questions I had, made a few trips back to pick up more supplies along the way. It all turned out amazing and glad I succeeded in the project.
Working with Wood from the Hood was a great experience. We went into the store, picked out a slab, and Jon made a gorgeous coffee table according to our specifications. It took about 8 weeks, which was very reasonable given the scope of work (and especially considering we are waiting much longer for furniture we ordered from reputable furniture stores). The end result is a beautiful statement piece that we will use for years to come.
