Deveney emailed me she was going to close my case. I asked why and what that means. And then I got a bill for $181 For her to close out my case and said I’d be getting the rest of my retainer back via a check for over $700 that I had. I did not know I was going to be getting charged $181 to close my case. Unfortunately, I could not even email her this to stop charging my account otherwise, I would get charged for an email!!! It was extremely important for me to work with a Black lawyer through my divorce given that my ex husband is white, our mediator was white, and his lawyer was white. I felt very outnumbered. Having a team who I didn't have to explain all of the racial nuances to made me feel safe and advocated for in the ways that were important to me. They did an amazing job with both the mediator and the opposing council, and helped me through some things that my last lawyer missed. Very responsive.
Going through a divorce is rough, it's emotionally and physically draining. The nervousness and anxious anticipation of each visit got me every time. The nervous shakes and belly aches resolved as soon as I'd see her face, even behind the facial covering. I could hear her smile in her voice.
