Poorly marked and tucked away in the West Village's bustling West 4th Street, you'd think it would be difficult for a bar like Vol de Nuit to survive. That, however, doesn't take into consideration Belgian beer and great French fries. With dozens of beer choices from the great Belgian breweries and a menu that focuses solely on mussels and 'pommes frites,' Vol De Nuit feeds the soul with equal parts of starch, salt and mild buzz. The calming atmosphere with warmth provided by inviting wooden benches and soothing roseate ligh... read more

Red-light Belgian bar where singles flirt over frites and brews. – In Short It's easy to miss this Belgian tavern hidden off Fourth Street. But through its low tunnel entrance lies a spacious open-air atrium reminiscent of a European sidewalk cafe--and the door to a sultry singles scene. Inside, dim red lanterns barely illuminate the mingling-friendly layout, roomy with a few velvet couches. A strong selection of Belgian beers--the most on tap in the city--eases the approach, and mussels and frites help settle the stomach.
a nice break from the usual poser bar scene – The former Frite Kot expanded nicely under its Dutch-Indonesian influence. the beers on the menu are largely Belgian (not German) and the fries are still fairly good, but, no longer the prinicpal reason to enjoy this place (mussles ok). the ambiance is excellent, relaxed, and easy, unlike the overloud pretentious joints vying for their share of posers. here you can meet people, talk, and share in some fantastic beer in a setting where the music is interesting, but not too loud, a... read more
Come and Bust a Nuit – Definitely not a place you'll find accidentally as the entrance is thru a little open alley. Small loungy atmosphere with a very relaxed feel. Nice selection of German beers all served by a very easy on the eyes female bartender. Don't leave without tasting the crisp pommes frites. Perfect place to just chill with the guys or take a date as opposed to the dog eat dog feel of some of the more packed Village bars.
Mussels and Fries! SUUUPER! – Great find in Greenwich Village. Loungy atmosphere wtih groovy music and incredible selection of beers. A good mix of locals(ask for George) and others.
Tres charmant ! – A fantastic selection of German beers, tasty salty 'frites' served in a paper cone and a relaxed den-like atmosphere, this place is a hidden tresure! The beers are served in yard glasses which is a fun touch and there is also a good selection of wines. The imported Euro music makes the ambiance complete. Come here for a great scene, sans the "scene".
DE LA BIERE ET DES FRITES – As I just mentionned, if what you are looking for os good belgian beer and fries, this is the place. A kind of back alley entrance not obvious from 4th st, gives this bar the mysterious and dark but jazzy ambiance. The background music is diverse with some French pop melodies once in a while. As any other mysterious place, the funky relaxed crowd seems to be here because of the "bouche a oreille" more than publicity, but if your "flair" is good enough the frites sold in the front street bazar will... read more
