Recently had to use the emergency vet due to holiday hours at my regular vet. My dog was seen for an acute vestibular event. She is over 100 pounds and was having seizure type events. We were I strutted that she would need to be on IV meds over night and the cost was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Serves its purpose as an emergency hospital. It seems to me, the main reason they are there {as others have mentioned} is how many test they can charge you for, so by the time you leave they have made a really big dent in your pocket. Really its my bad, I didn't want to take my pet there but I was in a life or death situation. I boarded my two pets a couple of years ago with them and both contracted kennel cough. Should have went with my first mind. They will try to empty your pockets at your weakest moment.
