When Dr. Berger came into the exam room, he was very cold. I relayed to him my eye history and the concerns previous surgeons had on potential retina detachment. He replied “that’s a good story” and began the exam. He was not gentle or explanatory with what he was doing. At one point during the first exam, he asked me to look at his right ear. With an instrument and his hand on my left eye, the bright light from the scope and equipment, it was very hard to even see his ear. He scolded me that I was “looking way too far right”. The initial exam was uncomfortable with some pain from the pressure he was putting on my eye with the lens and his hand. He then laid me back and went over to the desk with his assistant. He could not locate his depressor so my husband watched him remove most of the end of a q-tip which he then lubricated. At one point I heard the assistant ask if he needed it sterile and his reply was “it doesn’t matter”. He was quite rude to his assistant during the entire appointment. He then came over to perform the secondary exam on my left eye without explaining anything that was happening. He placed head gear on with magnification and bright lights and used the q-tip contraption as a depressor. This was extremely painful. I said “no”, “no”, “stop”, “please stop”, “STOP!!!!”. He continued. My husband got up and said “You need to stop. She is in pain. This is unsophisticated and unprofessional”. It took another 20 seconds or so for him to actually stop and he said “we are done”. I sat up in the chair trembling in a full sweat and replied “yes we are done”. This wasn’t a procedure that he couldn’t stop if he was hurting me, this was an exam. I was no longer consenting to the exam, I made that clear. He then condescendingly said that he never had anyone respond that way and that he needed to do that exam to see what was happening. I told him that he didn’t explain any of what he was doing, he was hurting me and I wanted it to stop. He just kept saying that’s what he needed to do and dismissed that it would be painful. He concluded that he believed the floater to possibly be a fragment of cataract surgery but then also said it could be from migraines. I don’t have migraines so I do not understand this assessment. Plus, he said he saw the floater/fragment, so again, I do not understand. I left the office in a panic and am completely traumatized. My eye is extremely sore and swollen and I now have pain behind my eye. I still have the floater.
