About this business

Longstanding popularity with locals and tourists alike, this restaurant has several special features--each with its own appeal. The oak bar is nearly 200 years old, while the Cannery Row room has a pirate-like atmosphere; the conservatory is alive with statues, and the Captain's Room captures days-gone-by with its Barbary Coast feel. Food-wise, this restaurant is diverse as well; the Abalone Bisque is world famous, and the venerable eatery specializes in create-your-own banquet meals. The service will be professional and per... read more

Monterey's Best Seafood Restaurant – But slow down once you arrive, because you'll want to take your time at this classic Monterey restaurant. You could go for a birthday or anniversary but also just because it's Sunday night and you're craving prime rib and don't want to cook. Fresh, fresh seafood beautifully prepared, an amazing, huge wine list and what looked like fantastic steaks--don't eat meat, but these looked and smelled so good I was tempted! It's been in Monterey for quite a while, and someone told me it's one of C... read more

Fine food, way overpriced with insincere and haughty service. – My wife and I went to the Sardine Factory on a Tuesday night for a romantic dinner. It was recommended very highly at the Winery in Cannery Row by both the staff and the patrons. An extra perk was that they would have no corkage fee for any wine purchased at the winery, and we had purchased a nice bottle for the occasion. The restaurant is beautiful, with multiple rooms each having their on charm. We ate in the Conservatory, a beautiful glass-domed room adorned ... read more

Lackluster Performance by An Old Standby – I am a frequent visitor to Monterey and have had a pleasurable experience at the Sardine Factory before. This experience was disappointing in the extreme. The ambience has not changed and is very pleasant, we dined in the room with the blue and yellow wallpaper and the fireplace blazing. The service, while pleasant, was a bit forced and insincere, and was comprised primarily of young kids with minimal training. We ordered the abalone bisque and seafood delight, which consisted of 3 ... read more

It's still great after all these years – We had dined here about 4 years ago and after having read some of the recent reviews, were not sure if it was a good as it used to be. Well for us it was still a great place to dine in Montery. The food was fantastic and the service was outstanding. Sure it's a little pricey; particularly if you get a bottle of wine. But I for one don't mind paying a little more for a dining experience.

Just go for the tapas! – How the Sardine Factory received a 9.5 I will never know. The restaurant is pricey and overrated. BUT, I can definitely recommend going for TAPAS! Not many people know about this, but you can spend a little less money and have a more casual, relaxed time in the lounge area munching on tapas with friends. I highly recommend the braised kobe shortribs!

User review by wesb – There are some really great aspects about the Sardine Factory, but I cannot recommend it. The decor is brilliant. Each room has its own distinct ambience, and all are fantastic. The service is excellent. The hosts and sommelier are especially pleasant. The Sardine Factory provides both a great setting and great service, but the food comes up way short. The prices for both wine and food are extremely high. This could be forgiven if the quality of the food was outstanding. Each course was completely devoi... read more

Much improved – We dined here about 4 years ago and 4 years prior to that. Now we questioned the thought of returning this year because of the less than average experience we have had. Well, let me tell you what a great surprise not only did we have the best night of our lives but we can't say enough!! We felt like Queens and Kings and everyone we came in contact with was delightful and very professional, like the old days. Please keep up the good work is shows!

Great Place – We went to the Sardine Factory expecting the usual fish house type restaurant but were pleasantly surprized. The food was incredible, the service impeccable. The restaurant is pricey, but gives you an all-around dinning experience. It was a nice treat!!

Classic elegance – We have wanted to dine here for years but have not been able. It was worth the wait and I must say we were not dissapointed in any way. The service was perfect the server talked with us as if we were the most special people in the world, his name I think was Vince. The night is one that we will soon not forget. Thank you Sardine Factory.
