About this business

The Hill Cafe serves food that is a cut above the usual neighborhood restaurants. Located in historic Church Hill, site of some of Richmond's most beautiful restored homes, the cafe is convenient to the Poe Museum, St. John's Church and Shockoe Bottom. Dark wood and a beautiful bar area, create a plainly decorated but cosy environment with delicious food and a good selection of beer, wine and liquor. The barbecued ribs are exceptional.

Church Hill Gem A Church Hill Institution - where would we be without our great, local businesses. Always delicious food, casual atmosphere. Great place to grab a drink and bump into a few neighbors.

Good food, good people – I go into the Hill Cafe a few times a week and I must say I love their food. Maybe once or twice I was bummed because their fries were a little over-cooked, but I wouldn't say I have been let down. Then again, I am no chef, but I really do love their food. It's a great place for lunch or dinner. If you want to head over on a Saturday at noon and grab their Hill Burger with caramelized onions and cheddar or perhaps a spicy cajun chicken wrap, it's a great place for a nice lunch. Not to mention, their ... read more

Often forgotten or overlooked – I've been to this place twice in the last 6 months. I am confused about the other reviews. I like the atmosphere of this bar/restaurant. It is a nice distraction from eating in the Fan. The food has been quite tastey both times. The Calamari is bad though over spiced and overbreaded. Too spicey unless you order a different dipping sauce. However, our main courses were excellent again and we washed them down with a couple of bottles of wine. Try the crabcakes or a special. I highly recommend it... read more

Classic American blue plate specials make every meal worth the climb. – The Scene New owners renovated this neighborhood café but left slices of charm intact. Colorful brick walls, dark wooden booths and nightly chalkboard blue plate specials welcome a full house of casual neighborhood regulars. Bottom and business district professionals make the climb to do deals over lunch or dinner and Sunday brunch brings a laid-back spread out the papers crowd. Service is personal enough for them to eventually know your name. The Food T... read more

An old Mainstay – It's very popular and will stay that way. My service was great, the place looks great but the food was hit or miss. The clamari was tremendously overseasoned to the point that it could have been a Funyun I was eating. My potatoes were cold but the fillet mignon was perfect (rare and tender). The tuna steak was uninspired and boring. It was a busy Saturday night so I guess I'll be forgiving - but still, for the money .... Oh, the entire staff was very friendly and attentive.

Won't Be Back! – Our waitress tossed menus at us and nastily stated that only the back of the menu was available. We thought we saw some quesadillas go by (not on the back), so we checked to be sure: "just the back!" she snapped. After taking our order with equally as much attitude, we didn't see much of her, had to practially flag her down for refills. Our food took almost an hour. Three ordered burgers, but weren't asked how they'd like them to be cooked; they arrived ranging from medium-rare to medium. We couldn't have as... read more

We Love the Hill! – We visit the Hill Cafe at least once a week for either a small snack or a full meal, and each time we've been the food has been wonderful (simple yet flavorful and consistant) and the service good. The creme brulee size leaves a bit to be desired (way to small for the price) The atmosphere is pleasant with a high comfort level.
