Great law firm. Their knowledge and persistence cant be surpassed. In 2009 my 15 year old son attacked me and I was put in a situation where I had to fend off his violent actions. As such, he sustained several injuries. DCFS laws dont look at the how or why and ultimately I was charged with abuse/neglect. The family defense center fought tirelessly on my behalf and got the 'indication' overturned.
The Center advocates for the parents who have been mistreated by child welfare. The Center provides a necessary check on a system which at times abuses its' power. There are times when removing children serves no purpose and actually harms children more. The Family Defense Center is located in Chicago but provides training to lawyers across the country on how to represent parents as well as how to get legislative amendments to law and policy changes within their state that unfairly penalizes parents and their children.
They were there when I had nearly given up hope. Colleen Garlington, pro bono attorney, and the Family Defense Center deserve a Medal of Honor!
They have given me the knowledge to appeal dcfs. For once I feel like I have power and hope through this time in our lives.
They help so many families. This firm does the right thing, not the usual thing!
