When The Downstairs in San Antonio closed years ago, the wife and I thought our speakeasy-style bar-to-visit went the way of the dodo bird. I'm happy to report that, upon traveling through Memphis, we have found a highly appropriate replacement. The Dame Bar, located under Hotel Pontotoc, is a fabulous place to sit and stay awhile. Tony and Matt at the bar were fantastic. We had a great time. The Wasabi deviled eggs were delicious and we loved all our cocktails! Clean bathrooms and clean bar. Thoughtfully decorated. Would also recommend staying at Hotel Pontotoc

In the middle of ordering drinks at the bar the bartender stops me mid sentence and said his brain cannot handle anymore orders and walked off. I left the bar at that point and went to another restaurant. I understand the pressure of being the lone server at a bar, however, it is highly unprofessional to speak to a customer this way and not take their order.

So definitely a great vibe, decor, atmosphere. Super cool, very few places in Memphis like it. But classic cocktail prices are really too steep, nonetheless the signature ones(like $18+ before taxes). So after tip you're in at $20+ for a Manhattan. (And I know TN liquor plus sales basically sets price to +25%.) But I know I can get same/better at a lot of places. The NAs are also way up there imo.
