There is little doubt that The Carlyle, with its magnificent view of Central Park and its close proximity to some of the best shops and museums in New York, is one of the preeminent "grand hotels" in New York. The Upper East Side landmark was built in 1930, when spacious accommodations, fine linens and furniture, and a large and attentive staff were the very least that might be expected for a true luxury hotel; and that tradition continues even today.

Old-school rules: Unparalleled class, comfort and service for generations of guests and residents. – With beautiful apartment-sized rooms, an understated vibe, unique furnishings and personalized service, it feels like home--and some lucky people do actually live here. Presidents, royalty and stars love it for its grace and discretion. The entire hotel was restored in 2001 by acclaimed designer Thierry W. Despont. Many of the 179 rooms and suites feature park views and terraces. Antique furnishings, twice-daily maid service ... read more
Take Me Back to Manhattan – The room, service and ambience truly speak of a bygone elegance and capture the spirit of Old New York. I went to see Eartha Kitt and was as impressed by the service as I was by her amazing performance. The food was basic, America fare - very well-prepared but nothing too exciting. And it was extremely expensive, but worth every penny. I would strongly recommend Cafe Carlyle as THE BEST special occasion restaurant in the city.
Great Woody Allen Show, lousy service – I booked a table weeks in advance for my mother and me to see Woody Allen's show in the Carlyle Cafe. Upon timely arrival they put us in the last corner of the room, next to the stage behind the drummer. It was not that there weren't any other tables free and we weren't dressed in jeans either. We were about to dine there for more than $500 including grat and cover! The food was ok but definitely not worth this money. The partial view table either. I did not want to spoil the party cau... read more
Cabaret great, prices not. – We went to go see Ute Lemper. During the first 15 minutes of the performance, the sound system gave horrible feedback. It was so bad, at one point she said, "Should I keep going? Paying $75 each just for the show, I expected the hotel to have a working and high end sound system. I naively thought dinner was served during the show, but the waiters don't come by once the shows start, so order your wine 30 mins before the show start time. The captain will expect a tip on your tab. Also, the Evian th... read more
Swanky This is truly a swanky NYC hotel. The staff is at your service 24 hours a day. Call downstairs and your wish is their desire! They're located on Manhattan's upper east side - and you'll pay for that fact. The rooms are beautiful - the furnishings are stunning and the bedding is really exquisite. The food is delicious - room service arrives promptly and the servers are very nice but not overbearing. This is a great spot for your second honeymoon - spoil yourselves!!
Great Hotel Service Carlyle Hotel is a great place to check in at Manhattan. It has great customer service and willing to help you with anything. They will be willing to provide anything of yours need. Great room service as well.
The Carlyle I was lucky enough to stay at the Carlyle for free one time with a friends family, and Id say its the best of the Fancy New York hotels that Ive been to. Great views, huge, apartment like rooms and suites (ours actually had a piano), and yet a very laid back atmosphere. Theres little pomp amidst the luxury. I did peek at the room service bill, and it was absurd. Ill probably never be able to afford it, but if youre looking to blow money on a swank hotel, go with the Carlyle. Also, Woody Allen is known to play Jaz... read more
Good taste and timeless class – My family visits the Carlyle each year and we always enjoy our stay. The suites are spacious and tastefully decorated. The service in exceptional, and the views of the park are a welcome perk. It is a convenient location for accessing the park and the shops along Madison and 5th avenues. There are some great restaurants in close proximity to the hotel as well. If you like the trendy scenes or wild nightlife then this is not the hotel for you, although it is a good place to spot the occassional... read more
The epitome of what good service should be – I took my wife to the Carlyle for her 35th birthday. The staff did an amazing job making us feel special. The food was wonderful, drinks in Bemelman's were wonderful, when you turn on the hurricane strength shower, you get hot water immediately, I could go on and on. The only bad thing about the Carlyle is that it has set the bar so high for other hotels, I don't know if I can travel again. Pricey, but it was worth every penny. We'll be back.
The Carlyle has a 4.5 star rating with 597 reviews.
