Not for single diners, this restaurant discriminates On travel by myself, I went to Sushi Sam's Edomata in San Mateo for dinner on Friday, Oct. 17th, 2008. The restaurant was busy, and I could see there were no tables available. When I requested seating for 1 person, the host asked me 4 times "Single?" "By yourself?" because he seemed to have trouble understanding I was dining alone. As I was dining alone, I thought it would be great to sit at the sushi bar and watch the preparations. There were two seats available at the su... read more

Over-hyped, but can be great San Mateon residents rave about Sushi Sam's, but I've always found it to be relatively average sushi fare with an above average price tag. Generally speaking, I'd rather eat elswhere but there is one exception: if you sit at the bar and only order off their erasable whiteboard, you're likely to have a wonderful meal. It will be pricey, but a meal of Sushi Sam's specials is a good meal PROS: convenient location downtown, fresh fish and specials are very good CONS: generally only average quality, e... read more

Sushi Sam's I am amazed at all the reviews that give this just 4 stars. Are you kidding?! The daily fresh fish selection is second to none. If you want fat, rice filled rolls this is not the place. If you want top shelf quality fish go to Sam's.

Good stuff This place was packed on a Wednesday night -- signs that it must have something going for it. The sushi was good! They had some unusual names for some of them, like the "hot dog" (a roll with fried yellowtail mix) and the "chili dog" (spicy tuna roll). As a hot dog connoisseur, i was slightly disappointed that it wasn't really 'hot dog sushi,' but only slightly so ;) Their side dishes were pretty good too, get the agadashi tofu and the chawan mushi.

funky sushi Fabulous, fresh sushi in a busy, unpretentious (close to cafeteria-style) restaurant, where waiting in line in the street is part of the atmosphere. Only disappointment was the sake--if you like unfiltered sake, you'll get it in a screw-top bottle with a nasty aftertaste. But if you're going there for food, you'll be happy.

Sushi Sam's is an experience in itself. Sam has been creating exquisit sushi dishes for over 20 years in the Bay Area. His fish is always fresh and thickly cut. Sam's ability to present and offer unique sushi items and dishes sets him apart from the rest. If someone is looking for "different", "fresh" and "for a great price", this is the place to be. Call for reservations as he is always busy.

Fresh and fast for lunch I just went with a friend to Sushi Sam's for lunch and it was a great place for lunch. Service was fast and friendly, and the sushi was very fresh and tasty. Prices seemed comparable to other local places and it was overall a very nice experience.

Sushi Sam's Edomata is great! They serve fresh and yummy sushi here. It's always busy here but it's so worth the wait. They have the BEST spider roll. Their lunch beno box is very good too.

lots of rice, bad menu and over priced I am not sure what all the hype is about this place. We got there, and they served me first and my date 10 minutes later... thankfully we had ordered appetizers for her to munch on. The menu items had no description, so unless you know the name of the sushi items in Japanese then you are out of luck. The eel sushi had eel as thin of sea weed on it, and LOTS of rice, for 13.00 !!! And they did not even have Salmon Maki (roll), I had to order it off the menu!
