The seafood specialties served at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar, some of the best dishes from Ethiopian culinary culture, are spicy, flavorful and aromatic. The interior decor is vibrant and includes African artifacts adorning the main dining room. There are also a number of authentic Mediterranean-style dishes on the menu. Spiced shrimp with tabbouleh and tomato chutney, and calamari tempura with garlic and red pepper sauce are the popular appetizers. Entrees include barbecued salmon with soy-honey glaze and slow-roasted duc... read more

Great Place – It's a really great place to chill with friends at the bar. We went there last week to celebrate my new job. The staff was accommodating. The food was good. We were there during afterwork hours so it wasn't so loud that we couldn't talk to each other. We were disappointed that there weren't any happy hour specials. I recommend this place and I will go back often,
Great place! – Some friends and I visited NYC this weekend. We went to the Sugar Bar on 7/11/08. We made reservations, so we didn't have a wait. The food was awesome! The entertaiment was spectacular! The only issue that we had, was once the place started to get crowded, we barely saw our wait staff. Other than that. I really recommend checking it out. The las chuletas are to die for! Also try the sugar tini. It is amazing! Pros: Great food Cons: Service could be a little better
Service has gone from "Bad" to "Abysmal" – The food at Sugar Bar is EXCELLENT. The issue is that you have to climb mountains to get to it. The servers seem to be under the impression that they're doing you a favor to stop at your table, and it is frequently a battle to get basics such as a menu, water, or your first drink if you don't bring it with you from the bar (and if you're trying to order during a live show, forget it; it's not happening). This issue has not improved over time; it was a problem five years ago, and it'... read more
What a great venue – I went to Ashford and Simpson's Sugar bar to celebrate my birthday. We had quite a large party (a little over 50) and the venue accommodated us better than we could have ever imagined. Our guest were very well greeted by the staff and were seated immediately. The service was amazing and the food was to die for. I was very demanding and the manger (Steve Abreu) was such a breeze to work with. He made sure everything was going smoothly for me and provided me with all the assistance I needed. They had a gre... read more
cozy spot for a date – i was just there on a friday night in oct. on a date and we liked the place. The staff was attentive without being at my table every 2 mins., the food was good and since we got there early, we were able to have quiet conversation without being side by side with full tables. Place must be a bit cramped though when full and bar area is small so it may get noisy but we would consider coming back but to stay for the live music.
Soooo Disappointed... – To sum it up, disappointed. My family went there to celebrate my father's 71st birthday. Beforehand, reservations were made for 5 and we were not told of a $10 cover charge due to an unheard of band. We were told that once we were seated and politely asked if that could be waived being that we weren't there to hear a band and already paid a $2 coat check charge each. The hostess spoke to the manager and the fee was waived which we thought was a great way to do business. We were told the manager said t... read more
The host on Saturday for the lounge was very unfriendly and demanding – My friend and I wanted to go to the Sugar Bar on Saturday December 30, 2006. We wanted to go in and have couple of drinks, so we asked the very nice hotess if we could look around before we go to the bar. She said sure and we were getting ready to just peek in, when a man who was very rude came out tof the lounge and said it was $10.00 to get in. We said we did not mind paying, if we could just see what was going on. He said what is there to see? You hav... read more
Hip Spot! – My friends and I stopped into Sugar last week to basically see what all the talk was about. Heard that it was one of the best places to see live music and we were very impressed with the setup they've got there. Such a low key place with plenty of celebrity eye candy splashed here and there. We went on a Tuesday when they had a jazz band playing. The music was great and so was the food. Definitely go!
Poor Service – The food was excellent (except the fried shrimp appetizer - it was overcooked). The atmosphere was nice in the front room, but despite a reservation, we were relegated to the rear, where we were treated like stepchildren - we had to flag someone down to take our order, water with no ice, we had to ask for extras (as opposed to someone asking if we needed something else). And, after all that, the 18% gratuity was added to our bill because we had a table of four. We refused to pay it. Sad that the service was so... read more
