The calibre of classes and fitness instructors are very hit and miss. There are a couple of really good instructors at this YMCA but they seem to prefer doing administrative tasks than instructing and leaving classes to volunteers who are well-intentioned but not seasoned, suitable or well trained. This gym is one of our favourite places in the beaches. It's not too busy, the staff is friendly and the facility is so clean and beautiful. The equipment is really well maintained and there is lots of free parking in the area. I don't even understand how anyone would give it a bad review because we love it. The YMCA actually makes going to the gym something we look forward to!
This gym is honestly an unhealthy environment. There are about four teenagers for every machine, and they treat the place like a hangout spot instead of a gym. They take up all the space, talk loudly, and make it nearly impossible to get a proper workout done. It’s just not a functional place to train.
It’s always hot, summer, winter, fall, spring, regardless of occupancy. Gym floor is not separated from rest of facility so the nice hot pool change rooms share atmosphere with the lifters. Nice.
As I have tried for msny months, I try this .... I was told by one of the lifeguards that management doesn't care." Over many months, I have asked that the swim lane signage to indicate rest to right and turn around to left as it is at the Central Y otherwise one butt heads the oncoming swimmer if you turn around on the right from the direction from which you came. 8 oct 2025 again, same issue. two people resting in opposite corners at end of lane with one sprawled out ..
