My mother is still with us, and just a few days ago she was moved here for palliative care. As her son, I can honestly say that I cannot imagine a place where she could receive more compassion, dignity, respect, and genuine love during this incredibly difficult stage of her life. I cannot in good conscience stay silent about the experience our family had at this hospital with my uncle. During an incredibly vulnerable time, we witnessed a level of care that was deeply disappointing and at times distressing to watch. The staff were rough and careless in handling him physically, showing little regard for his comfort or dignity. Watching a loved one slowly fade away in palliative care is already one of the most painful experiences a family can go through. Families come to palliative care hoping for compassion, dignity, comfort, and support during the hardest days of their lives. Unfortunately, our experience at St. Peter’s was deeply disappointing and emotionally distressing.
