About this business

Worth the wait on weekends, the ultra-mod Soma is perfect for a date night, dinner with friends, or a sushi snack with sake before hitting the town. Soma's inspired menu offers tricked-out sushi classics alongside fully cooked fish, meats, and poultry. Miso Soup is hand-poured tableside into a broad bowl, revealing a perfectly poached quail egg floating amongst delicate enoki mushrooms. Fun-seekers can feast on the flash fried Drunken Irishman roll with its layered textures and flavors. Sashimi fans will be floored by the Sa... read more

Great Vibe/ High Quality Food – I just don't get all the reviews hating on Soma. I have been at least 7 times in the last few months and had a great time on every occasion. Yeah sometimes things can get a little slow on the weekends, but hello ,that tends to happen when your dining in what might be the busiest, most happening restaurant in houston right now. You think the hot spots in NY or Cali don't get a little crazy during the peak hours? Have another drink people and relax. As far as the service goes, the ones who have ... read more

It's refreshing. Soma in Houston – For some Texans who do not know the Japanese fusion cuisine in California, the size of dishes may not be enough and they were at a wrong place. If you go to similar restaurants anywehre in the US, the portion is relatively small like Some's dishes. The Chef is well known and has had a very successful career in LA and other towns before he relocates to Houston. And he is only working on Saturdays and Sundays. If he were not successful, how come Food Network asked him to appear on one of thei... read more

Overpriced, Ridiculous portions – I'll just start by saying my boyfriend and I ended our romantic evening here with a trip to Jack in the Box across the street. We tried to eat at Max's Wine Dive, but due to the wait moved to Soma - which had no wait. I can see why. I ordered a hand roll and the foie gras for a light dinner. Light isn't the word for what I got. The Foie Gras portion was so small it was insulting. I literally got a plate with 3 small skewers and a PILE of bread cubes (I assume they were supposed to be crouton... read more

Great experience and really good sushi, really – I went about 1 month ago with a neighbor and just for some context to my rating: both of us are experienced Sushi lovers. You can tell that the staff is still getting their stuff together, but they were genuinely interested in making sure we were happy. We asked for a sampling of the chef's sushi and sashimi (giving a general price we wanted to stay below) and were extremely excited when the dishes came to our table. They were so artfully prepared that neither of us wanted to ... read more

Delicious – Ok, I came here the first week when service was off (paper menus, etc) but the staff was really helpful and the food we got was creatively flavorful and we left full. This is my second visit and the place is beautiful with great waitstaff and everything is running smoothly. I'm not a drinker so I didn't try any of the sake, but I did have dessert and it's the best. Being a sizable group, we had one of each dessert, and they all impressed. Seriously. The sushi we had was fresh and delicious. This place obviously p... read more

Save your money on less pretentious food/chef. – Well, we went here for my boyfriend's birthday. We both ordered an entree each. When my dish came out I was amazed by how few slices there were of the meat. Hey, I 'get' that this is francofusion or whatever you call it that you can charge this sort of money for a plate of nothing, but c'mon, seriously. Give us a plate of nothing that at least tastes good and melts in your mouth. The menu descriptions were nothing like what arrived to our table. The walk-up is horrible, but th... read more

Just a few saving graces. – I like sushi, I like expensive sushi, I like cheap sushi. I just don't like expensive sushi that looks and tastes like cheap sushi. I also don't like a bar that doesn't have the one drink that I like to order. OK pear vodka may not be the most popular drink out there but this is the first upscale place that I've been to that doesn't have it. Anyways, the location is good. The decor is actually pretty inviting. The staff is friendly. The patio is a great touch. The parking is crowded. The sushi is ... read more

Great atmosphere & really good food! – This past Saturday was my 1st Soma experience and I have to say I left a happy person! First impression was WOW! I loved the Asian decor, esp. the wall to the right before the bathrooms. I was there for a b-day party of about 15, mostly girls so of course everyone was late, but the waiter was great. He made sure that as everyone got there we had our drinks w/in minutes and catered to our every whim with a smile. The food was excellent! I have found a new favorite dish. I've always liked... read more

Surprisingly terrible – So, apparently the chef used to work at Noe, and apparently it is this affiliation that has allowed him to get away with opening and maintaining such a perfectly awful restaurant and experience. At a table of 6, with various dishes ordered and tried, the only thing we unanimously agreed was good was the soup. Ordering the Omakase (Chef's choice) at a Japanese restaurant is a good point of reference to gauge the skill of the chef and the quality of service. The Omakase was the worst I've ever had. The ... read more
