Happily billed us for the balance of emergency care my wife received in an in-network hospital, after insurance paid only a small fraction of what he asked. He saw her for about three minutes. Balance-billing is technically legal in Utah since he *personally* is out-of-network, but it's still reprehensible, and there are at least 20 states where it's illegal. Dr Smith was excellent with my Mom in the ER. First of all, he was just so kind with her, took the time to really understand her health history and what her current concerns were. He felt where her pain was that she was having for the last month, and noticed how she almost hit the ceiling in severe pain. He immediately did a CT scan and blood work, found she had a broken rib and for no apparent reason. He admitted her to the hospital so she could be monitored and get a bone marrow biopsy done.
