I'm a guy who has been going here nearly all my life. As long as you're clear with what you want, you're guaranteed a good cut and good service. So don't be afraid of dialogue! Once I got a cut, and although it was a good cut, I went back an hour later to see if he could cut it a little shorter. He did, and when I went to pay him, he said, "Oh, no! That's fine, buddy! You keep that. You were just in here!" He's a talented, friendly guy.
