The Shelby Star traces its roots to August 1894 when The Cleveland Star began publication under the editorship of 17-year-old Clyde R. Hoey. The newspaper grew from a biweekly in 1911 to triweekly in 1934. In May 1997, Freedom Communications, a family-owned media company based in Irvine, Calif., purchased the paper. Freedom publishes nearly 30 daily newspapers, more than 40 weekly newspapers and owns approximately 10 network-affiliated television stations.
