Honestly not sure why this hike is rated so high.. besides the occasional interesting rock formation or neat tree, it’s steep, jagged and short with little pay off. I’m rarely bored on a hike but this one is not much in the way of intrigue. There is a reason the parking lot is rarely full I guess
Restroom at trailhead. Well marked trail
Perfect trail with kids—lots to explore on this loop with a perfect break mid way through at the lake. We climbed on downed trees, went up to rock formations, explored a dry creek bed with slate everywhere. At the lake, you can sit and enjoy a snack, skip rocks, and see birds flying overhead. My kids ask to go back on this trail often—one of our favorites.
I've been doing this hike for years, and I love it so much. There's a place somewhere around the middle of the hike where you can take a small trail (like twenty feet) to get to the lake. My dogs love it! There are a few spots where it's a pretty steep uphill, so I wouldn't recommend this as a first hike for anyone, but if you do them a fair amount, it's perfect.
