This department is an embarrassment to San Mateo. The morale is dead, and the automated kiosk is a rude excuse for the receptionist to cut you off as you approach the city for the first time. People there need to stop being wanna-be-planners and actually get us to speak with a planner. No, they simply say "it's on the website", "did you check the website?", "we already explained that on our online checklist"..... they are not welcoming. Very sour staff, except for a good new-hire they made early in 2024 that actually cares.

I had to come in to ask a specific question regarding a potential customer unique situation with their sewer lateral. As you come into their lobby, you are usually greeted by the information desk. We got there at 10:40 and there was no one at the information window between that time and 11am. No big deal, there is a self-serving computer where you sign in to be seen by the next available person, depending on your needs. It clearly states you will have a 10-minute slot with a customer service representative, based on my needs... read more
