Best in Morningside – This is the best pizza place in Morningside Heights, but hardly the best in the city. Cheese and sauce are flavorful, crust is a tad too chewy for my taste. Good soda selection (Dr. Brown's). Most people in the neighborhood like to go to Koronet's for a slice. Their loss, our gain. Place is usually not busy so it's not too hard to grab one of the few seats.

This place rocks! – I think this is the best pizza in the city. The plain is good but the spinach is better. One tip - don't let them catch you with a napkin on your pizza, taking the oil off, because they will tell you they don't like it.

Best pizza in New York City by far – By far the best pizza I've ever had in my 16 years alive. It's nothing like any other pizza in the city where it all tastes the same. I have friends from Queens and the Bronx who come over weekly and demand that we go to Sal and Carmine's. Oh and this is the only pizza I've ever found that tastes good if you leave it in the fridge over night and reheat it the next day. I imagine that if I went to Italy, this is what pizza would taste like.

Fantastic pizza without pretensions from an unassuming storefront parlor. – The Scene Raised in Italy, Sal and Carmine have been in the pizza business forever. They know their product is among the best, and they don't have to gussy it up by smiling at the customers, letting it suffer through delivery, or any of that nonsense. There are a few tables in the back, where pizza connoisseurs can be seen huddled over their pies. The Food This is the pinnacle of the classic Neapolitan-American slice. It's worth the trip uptown, with... read more

Well worth the stop in, especially since they don't deliver! – I grew up on Sal & Carmine's pizza. Now that may make me jaded but in reality it just speaks to how lucky I was to be raised on the UWS and got to school a stone's throw from their original spot on W. 94th. Thankfully they relocated to W. 102nd street and the legacy continues. Hot, thin slices with just the right balance of cheese and sauce (what's in that any way?). One slice never seems to be enough and where else can you get a cold can of celery soda to wash i... read more

Salty pizza & under cooked dough – My co-workers & I treked our way from Mid-east all the way to try this famous slice, we were utterly disappointed first with the shape of the pie, it wasn't round, but more of a football shaped, oval. After my first bite, I was in need of two bottles of water b/c it was too salty for my taste buds, and the crust or dough was too chewy, perhaps undercooked. It wasn't only me, both my co-workers thought the same. We concluded it wasn't worth the trip, & after getting back, I can drink a whole... read more

Better than average and no line – I agree with rzap1122 - the regular slice was way too salty. And actually one of my slices was very undercooked - I'll excuse that - the other slice was fine. Bread is decent. All in all though, a better than average NY slice, but nothing mind blowing. Better off going to brick oven restaurants in Manhattan or Brooklyn. You want a good slice to go - head to Westchester. And let's clear this up. This pizza is neither undercheesed or overchessed - it's pretty average.

Best "street" pizza in Manhattan – I also grew up eating Sal's Pizza. During the 60's, while at Joan of Arc JHS on 93rd off Amsterdam Ave, we'd go down the street for lunch and have a slice for about 25 cents (Yes, I remember Phil's and there was NEVER any contest!!). Sal's was on Bwy. between 94th and 95th, just next door to The Symphony movie theatre and around the corner from the Thalia - later moved "uptown" to Bwy. between 102nd and 103rd. Sal's has always been the best pizza around - for those in the know on the Upper ... read more

Best Pizza – I created an account here just to comment on this. I grew up on the upper west side, I remember when Sal & Carmine where in the 90's before they moved, and i was a tough neighborhood. They hung in there, moved uptown, and this is still the best pizza by far that you can get in NYC. The only caveat is that you have to eat it there. It is not the same reheated or cold. Sal & Carmine make their pies at their own pace, they never keep a stack of pies pre-made, so you always get a fresh slice. It is perfect, a perfec... read more
