From tofu, Saikoro steak and Surume Ika Yaki to the patent sake, you can get it all at Sakagura Restaurant. By now, you would have guessed that the restaurant serves traditional Japanese cuisine and of course, the staple rice-wine sake, without which the authenticity of the eatery would be incomplete. The place is known for being one of the best sake bars in the country, with a selection of over 200 varieties of sake that are imported from Japan. This beautifully decorated cozy joint serves green tea and it also has a fully ... read more

More than 400 sakes – To find a restaurant that carries over 400 sakes in Tokyo is a rarity. To find one in Manhattan is just mind-boggling. This place is great! It's like a little hidden Sake / Pub where you go down this staircase, through some bamboo fenced up broiler room and into what I like to call Shangri-La. I'll say it again,400 different sake to choose from.
Bring a knowledgable friend to maximize the experience – My brother and I dined on a Sunday night. We had reservations for 7:30 but it was nearly empty when we arrived so we opted to eat at the bar. When we left at 9:30 there wasn't an open table. Fortunaltely, bro had eaten here several times before and had a few favorites dishes to suggest from the menu. I am not initiated to Japanese food beyond the average sushi bar, so I was a litlle overwhelmed by the food and sake menus. Our waitress/bartender was very knowledgable an... read more
great place loved it – loved this restaurant. Good atmosphere. good food. great service clean nice good best sushi bet sashimi loved it
Very good and different food in a hidden spot – I'll assume you know about the "discreet location", but the food is not conventional Japanese. There's a large choice of tapas style dishes so this is a good place for "snacks" but one can easily make a meal of it too, as we did. The food quality ranges from good to excellent, and should provide choices for even those looking for more conventional food. After reading reviews here, I was bracing myself for a hefty bill, especially knowing what some upscale Japanese restaurants c... read more
Very Good – I was actually in this building with my husband when I saw the sign for a Japanese restaurant I am not into the raw food but my husband is. We had a delightful dinner and my husband was very pleased with the service. He thought it was a strange location, in the basement, but the food and atmosphere was great. We will stop by when we are in the area again.
Great – This is one of my fav Japanese restaurants in NYC. It was a hidden gem for a while but ever since they got on open table it's been hard to get in without a reservation. It's still a must try if you haven't tried it yet. My favorite dish is the Sake Ikura Don...
Best, Most Authentic Japanese Food in New York – This is the place we dine with my husband's Japanese family on special occasions. It is truly authentic, and as such, you MUST allow a minimum of 2 1/2 hours or so for your meal... it is meant to be a slow-paced, relaxing, enjoyable experience, and not a place to go wolf down some chow. Try the beef negimaki, the abalone sashimi, and the black sesame creme brule for desert! Even simple, homey food like karaage and agedashi tofu are elevated to a fine art. The service is attent... read more
Best Japanese! – I went for Sake and loved the food and ambience! Staff was extremely nice and patient! Food was really reasonable and excellent! Would defiantly recommend!
Sake and sashimi in Midtown east. – In Short Enter through the corporate lobby, follow a small gold sign that points down an industrial stairwell and you'll happen upon a subterranean sake lounge with a highly loyal following. American jazz is the music of choice, but the decor is pure Japanese minimal, all bamboo plants and paper lanterns. There's an extensive sake menu and the dinner menu offers sashimi (no sushi), as well as a range of less familiar Japanese dishes.
