Consulted Shirley for my 85 year old relative suffering of hernia on a self-pay basis. He ill advised open surgery. We are glad we took second opinion and consulted another surgeon who strictly advised against open surgery due to age and recommended laparoscopic procedure. Just because we were self-pay, Shirley's cost for open surgery was four times the national average cost for laparoscopic procedure code 49650.
