I saw Dr. Shuy in my early 20's. He's a great person & he really cares. I haven't seen him in 10 yrs but still remember how kind & compassionate he was to me. He will spend personal, unpaid time speaking with his patients. He really goes above & beyond. Dr. Shuy is funny & relatable & I highly recommend.
Joel is practical, intelligent and reliable.
Joel has made my mental health considerably worse since our first meeting. I had been put on so many different drugs I honestly felt like I was being experimented on, when I told him how I felt about a certain drug's side effects, he was in denial of this and changed other medications several times which had no effect. His secretary is extremely unprofessional and she only answered my phone call once in my 4 years of experience with this company. Joel Puryear made my mental health incredibly worse. My old provider retired so all I was looking for was a new provider to keep me on my stable prescriptions. Joel changed every single one of my medications multiple times. I felt like a lab rat. He put me on a new medication every month. Which made me have mental breakdowns because I couldn’t handle coming on and off so many new medications. If you’re looking for a provider to give you stable treatment, stay away.

He is exceptionally smart, with a natural curiosity and an up to date practice and thorough mastery of the newest publications and information, though also comfortable stepping outside the sometimes rigid boxes of psychiatric practice.
