I recently tried to return a pair of pants I purchased at REI after they shrank despite me carefully following the fabric care instructions. When I explained this to the associate, I was told that shrinkage is not an acceptable reason for a return. What frustrated me most wasn’t the policy itself, but the way the situation was handled. Had a very unfortunate situation with a defective pair of shoes. Have been an REI fan for years but totally put off by the way this situation was handled. The shoes were worn, however there was clearly an issue with this pair that was being blamed on the wear. It is unfortunate that this loop hole was used instead of providing an outstanding customer service opportunity that I have come to expect from REI. Just makes me sad that customer service has become so rare.

I've been a fan of REI for probably 15 years, and a member for 11 years. It's still a fine place to buy whatever you want that they carry, but the customer service is pretty uneven. I recently experienced this when I went to talk to an associate about good replacements for my tent of 14 years. I had researched most of their online offerings, and they seemed to fall into two buckets that weren't quite what I wanted. Drove down from Lodi to try on a pair of running shorts listed as in stock. Not only were they not in stock but they didn’t carry M’s in any of the alternative styles. Eventually found one pair in the garage sale area but when I went to get to try them on there was no one to help open the fitting room despite three employees chatting near the bathrooms. Wound up hanging out by the changing room with another guy while we took turns pressing the button to call for an attendant. Eventually just gave up and walked out.

This was my first time at this location. Employee “Elizabeth” was very helpful with my returns! I observed the store very clean & merchandise displayed well! I was asked by several employees if I needed help, (which is always excellent!) as I browsed. I enjoyed seeing the glass case of gear “from way back when”! I highly recommend this location!! 👍👍🇺🇸😁
