One fine day I needed to find a new dentist close to my home. So I called Dr. Lucero's office to see if they were accepting new patients, they were, good! And did they accept Blue Shield of California? Yes again, good! So I made an appointment, went in, filled out the new patient questionnaire and submitted my Blue Shield of California insurance information. After the visit was over, the receptionist told me that I had to pay out of pocket $427 because I was a "first time patient", and this is their policy for first time patients. And that I would be reimbursed when my insurance paid them. Okay, fine, but unusual I thought. So I paid. Hmm, I've never had to pay "full pop" up front to a dentist before, but I liked him and he gave me good news. I received my Blue Shield statement in the mail about 3 weeks later and was totally shocked to see that Blue Shield only paid $55 of the $427! So I immediately called them to ask why, and they told me that Dr. Lucero is "out of network" and that they'll only cover me for $55. What! I was furious! Why didn't the receptionist tell me that they were out of network?! They know this! I feel I've been bamboozled by their receptionist NOT telling me that they were out of network! They waited until after the dental service was performed to disclose the cost too. Standard X-rays, cleaning and evaluation. A simple and consistent set of procedures that are time and time again performed like clockwork certainly have a standard cost, right? Like a service for your car, there's an upfront dollar amount disclosed before any work is performed, right? And if any additional work is needed, then an estimate for further repairs is generated, right? Not here... I was hit with the bottom line after all was said and done... Why? Because they knew I was out of network. They didn't tell me this up front because they wanted the work done first, and now their money was guaranteed under the ominous shadow of a "credit ding". Had I been told upfront by the receptionist that they were "out of network", I would have found a different dentist that was IN network!!! Yes, I feel bamboozled! My insurance covers FREE cleanings and FREE X-Rays in network! WTH!

Overbill insurance for cleanings and they expect you to pay the balance. Also took 3 phone calls to receive a call back from their billing office. Glad I didn’t get more than a cleaning and X-rays.
