I took the studded snow tires through the snow storm on I-40 recently, passed snow plows a couple of times, and drove ok at 40-60mhp with low visibility in the dark during a storm. It didn't seem cold enough to make ice at the time either. They worked quite well enough. My car became covered in firm slush.
