I noticed some water on the floor of our furnace room that didn't look like it should be there. I called a reputable company that I've done business with before to come take a look. The prognosis wasn't a happy one. They diagnosed a coolant leak, and with the age of the system and usage of an outdated form of freon they recommended a full replacement.
