My understanding is that both the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) emphasize acknowledging and repairing emotional injuries before moving to problem solving. That was not my experience. Instead, I felt dismissed, unheard, and ultimately more traumatized after the sessions.
I told the therapist that I had experienced abuse and significant trauma, yet I felt dismissed throughout the sessions. I was told to “focus on the future, not the past,” and my feelings and questions were never acknowledged. When my partner asked me questions, I was expected to answer immediately, while my own questions were repeatedly left unanswered.
