I recently attempted to donate at a OneBlood mobile “Big Red Bus” blood drive and had a concerning experience. Instead of the usual finger-stick test, a non-invasive thumb device was used to check hemoglobin. The reading came back at 6.9, and I was told twice that my “iron was 6.9,” without any explanation that this was a screening estimate or that the device can sometimes be inaccurate.
