If an alarm sounds while your boat engine is running, this can be indicative of one of several issues, including low oil or overheating. If the problem is severe, the engine will either slow down to a low rpm or shut off altogether to prevent further damage.

Whereas larger marine diesels may require two or more alternators, smaller marine vessels usually use only single alternator circuits. In these circuits, power is divided amongst the engine-starting battery and the domestic or house battery by use of a split-charge diode or a mechanical switch.

Although your motor and hull may be designed to withstand the damaging effects of water, the rest of your boat may not fare so well against it. If you’re starting to notice rust on the control panel or warping on the wood, it may be time to make repairs.

If you own a boat, you've probably heard different opinions on how often you should wax it. Boats used mostly in fresh water don't need to be waxed as often as those used mainly in corrosive salt water. The latter should get a protective wax coat about once a month.

Considering adding some upgrades to your boat? One of the most popular upgrades is the audio system. No matter your favorite car audio brand, it most likely makes some great marine options for decks, amps, and speakers.

Leather is sometimes used for upholstery on the interior of a boat. To care for the leather and keep it soft, spray with a leather cleaner, and wipe with a dry cloth. Finish by applying a leather conditioner.

You can select between a standard “Y” adapter and a reverse “Y” adapter. The reverse “Y” is safer and allows a vessel with a 50A 125V/250V shore power inlet to utilize two dockside 30A 125/V receptacles.

If your marine alternator has a single pulley, you need to know the width of the belt before replacing it. This is measured across the top of the belt at its widest part. In some cases, you may find double bets or a serpentine belt.

If you aren’t going to be using your boat for a season or more, you should prepare it by giving it a good cleaning from front to back. Wipe out the lockers and drawers, rub down the wood with lemon oil, and scrub the carpets.
