About this business

In 1972, Martin Litton sent a young dory guide to Lewiston to expand his fledgling river company, Grand Canyon Dories, into new territory. Since then, OARS Dories has been operating first-class Idaho river trips on the Snake River through Hells Canyon and on the Middle Fork of the Salmon, Main Salmon and the Gorges of the Lower Salmon River.

My husband and I took a 6 day, 5 night trip with OARS on the Main Salmon in early August. It was the best summer vacation I have ever taken. All you have to do is set up your tent each night and pack it up in the morning, they do everything else. The meals they prepare are delicious, and the guides are fun and informative. You are on river time and get to see and learn about the Salmon River and its past and present inhabitants. The whole experience was amazing. If you ever have an opportunity to take such a trip I highly ad... read more

The guides were super nice and energetic all day every day! The view was amazing and the hikes were spectacular! This was my first time on an OARS trip and it is an experience I will never forget. The rapids were amazing. The still water was relaxing, and the water was super refreshing, since it was a hot week. They had many boat options, and camping was extremely comfortable. The food was spectacular, we had French toast and bacon for breakfast, pesto pasta and salmon for dinner, and sandwiches for lunch. My family and I ha... read more

We loved being completely 'unplugged' from the outside world and being 'present' with the other folks on the trip. I didn't plan on trying the inflatable kayak and was surprised how much I gravitated towards it - it was really a testament to how comfortable our guide Dylan A. made people feel as he led from the paddle boat.

I have done two OARS trips and plan to do more! My 2 daughters and I rafted Hells Canyon with them in 2022. Then we did the Main Salmon in 2023. Both trips were fantastic with amazing, inspiring, knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating guides. The rapids, views, hikes, food, animals and nature did not disappoint. The other participants were interesting and fun to share the experiences with. I highly recommend OARS if you are looking for a fun-filled, memorable, “unplugged,” soul-filling vacation!
