Nijiya market comes to the rescue whenever you are in need of Japanese ingredients be it the rice and the weekly supply of natto beans or just a pocky and ramune run. Check out the deli for fresh daily bento lunches, a variety of cold veggie dishes, Japanese fried chicken, croquettes, and, of course, the quick fix of a salmon okaka onigiri. Located conveniently in the same block as the Peace Plaza and Japantown mall, it's an easy stop for some red bean ice cream on the way back after a thoroughly Japanese afternoon.

Nijiya Market is fun! Nijiya is a great market for Japanese products, and other tidbits of that nation's cuisine and tastes. They definitely have a lot of heavily processed foods, and sometimes wrap vegetables in plastic wrap and foamed plastic, which is just not right. They're to-go foods are hit-or-miss sometimes. But it is at a reasonable price. It's also just a cool, weird grocery store space.
Excellent Selection If you are looking for a Japanese supermarket - this is it. They carry everything, and have a wonderfully large selection. Looking for Japanese curry? They have several brands, flavors, and sizes. They are also the only place around here that carry polished brown rice (50%, 70%, and just brown.) They also have a great hot/cold prepared food section, meat and fish section, and a smallish produce area. Truly one stop shopping! PROS: Lots and lots of stuff. CONS: One crabby checker - hope you don't get her!
This is one of the best supermarkets in San Francisco. Located in Japan Town, this supermarket has the best selection of Japanese snacks and cooking products. In addition, the supermarket also provide fresh lunch boxes for people who work near by. My favorite item in this supermarket is their seaweed salad. Only the freshest ingredients are used in this salad, so it is not surprising that the seaweed salad is often the first thing that's sold out in a matter of minutes. I also like their selection of frozen Japanese dishes s... read more
Yay for japanese food Yay for japanese market. It's surprisingly big for being in SF and it does hold down j-town as a good market. Has all the typical japanese groceries with the ready to microwave and eat foods. It's a nijiya.
