This is an awe-inspiring facility. Across three axes of 13 miles apiece, 27 dishes collect energy from space. Not just near space, but the farthest reaches of the universe from our home planet. An informative program at the visitor center is a great start. Groups regularly bring optical telescopes to view the heavens, taking advantage of the very dark night skies on the Plains of St. Augustin. The dishes have shown up in movies like Close Encounters and Contact, and are nuts to see up close.
