Eventually we reach......the utmost limits of our telescopes. There, we measure shadows, and we search among ghostly errors of measurement for landmarks that arè scarcely more substantial. This is why I would recommend NRAO.

This is an awe-inspiring facility. Across three axes of 13 miles apiece, 27 dishes collect energy from space. Not just near space, but the farthest reaches of the universe from our home planet. An informative program at the visitor center is a great start. Groups regularly bring optical telescopes to view the heavens, taking advantage of the very dark night skies on the Plains of St. Augustin. The dishes have shown up in movies like Close Encounters and Contact, and are nuts to see up close.

It was the highlight of me and my husband’s Albuquerque vacation :) The anticipation of arriving there and getting a glimpse of one of these magnificent satellites on the way to the site was nothing short of amazing! From watching the informational film (narrated by none other than Jodie Foster), to seeing the VLA satellites up close and then stopping in to the fabulous gift shop, it was worth the drive! Best of all, on our way into the facility, I spied a few antelope grazing and they even let me take their picture ;)
