Overlooking the Harvard Yard, Mr. Bartley's was established in 1960 by Joe and Joan Bartley. The third generation of the Bartley family has joined the gang to serve the locals their venerable burgers. Mr. Barteley's is an institute by itself and is always bustling with people. Decked up with political posters, quirky signs and bumper stickers, it has been churning out great burgers for decades now. Their unfrozen beef is hand-cut and ground daily to give their burgers a distinct taste. Celebs like Shaquille O’Neil, Bob... read more

best burger – the burgers at bartley's are better than most steaks in boston. I can't fathom how any of the reviewers could have been indifferent to the burgers there, but I guess everyone's different. I myself never realized there could be such a thing as a really great burger 'till I ate at bartley's. It has ruined burgers from chili's and the like for me. They also have great lime rickeys and onion rings. I think most of the other food (besides the burgers) is only so-so.
Harvard Doctorate in Burgerology – Absolutely terrific burgers - don't miss the Sweet Potato Fries. Also feast on the collection of original posters: theater, movies, concerts, Elvis, Bogey; and on some really wild bumper stickers; the place is plastered with them. There's a wonderfully mixed clientele: local residents, Harvard students, faculty and nostalgic alumni all packed cheek by jowl, chowing down.
It isn't like homemade; it's better – Flat out great hamburgers of all permutations. And the lime rickies are terrific.
Reno's Ratings – This is the icon of the greater Boston burger world. If you want the perfect Cambridge/Harvard burger experience, this is THE place. I truly love it and the food really is good.
get your ass down here! – best burger joint you will ever find, regardless of how long you search
Maybe it's a regional thang... – I don't get it...anyone up here ever tried the Fuddruckers chain? Down where I came from, the locals there rated 'em #1!!! (Miami)...now, maybe it's a matter of taste, or maybe they cook 'em different up here, but try 'em, I think you'll like 'em! Big, hot, delicious, juicy, thick, cooked to your liking 'melt in your mouth' burgers!!! Beef...it's what's for dinner...at Fudd's.
Darn Good Burger – Bartley's is not about romance, not about comfort, not about long leisurely meals - it's about getting a good hot filling meal just the way you like it right in the heart of Harvard Square. Great burgers, cooked the way you want it (I like mine RARE), and lots of other comfort food to choose from. It's an institution!
Don't know why... – Burgers were overcooked, the dining area overcrowded, and diners over-enthusiastic...but it was fun experience nonetheless!
Why on earth... – ...do people think that Bartley's is so good? It's not BAD, but it's certainly not worth all the excitement that surrounds it (and definitely not worth buying a T-shirt!). John Harvard's Brew House has much, much better burgers (and costs about the same for them) as does Chili's (which costs even less). Lee's Sandwich Shop on Church Street is by far the best in Boston Metro, though, and cheaper than anywhere else. I'd say skip Bartley's, though you might want to go at least once for the experience (or if yo... read more
